Once again, Verizon top our speed charts with average download speeds of 20.62Mbps across both 4G and 3G. Verizon have been making strong strides towards 5G deployment recently, marking the first data sessions outdoors rather than in a lab and using multicarrier aggregation to boost signals into the gigabit range.
T-Mobile, who place third overall in our download speed chart, actually report the fastest 3G speeds of the group at 4.21Mbps but are let down by 4G speeds of only 11.46 Mbps. T-Mobile also lead our upload speed tests, ahead of Verizon, AT&T and Sprint respectively, with average 4G speeds of 9.37Mbps.
T-Mobile top our latency chart
As well as topping 3G download speeds and overall 4G and 3G upload speeds, T-Mobile also lead our latency chart throughout the US. Having recently promoted their Chief Operating Officer Mike Sievert to the role of president, T-Mobile continue moving forward with their acquisition of AT&T, who actually perform best for latency when we drill down to look specifically at the Texas and California states.
AT&T and Verizon perform well for network stability
With low average jitter and packet loss, AT&T and Verizon both perform well for network stability. This is good news for Verizon, demonstrating reliability across their network, as they recently suffered a massive outage across Oklahoma. T-Mobile also demonstrated low average jitter over the past month but with slightly higher packet loss.
Our findings for the United States are based on 11.9 billion network quality measurements including 1 million speed tests in May 2018. Our latest complimentary Mobile Experience Report is available to download from the Tutela Insights portal.
