October 2018
Our results for September continue to show winners all round in Mexico, as Movistar lead download speeds, Telcel perform best for upload speeds and AT&T retain the lead in latency.
Gaps close but Movistar retains the lead for download speeds
The gap between Telcel and Movistar has shrunken slightly for 4G download speeds compared with our August report, but Movistar still lead the group in Mexico with average download speeds across both 3G and 4G of 10.05 Mbps. Telcel place second on 4G but rank third when 3G tests are also taken into account, marginally behind AT&T who score 8.77Mbps. The gap between the three operators is even closer in Nuevo León, where just 1 Mbps separates first place Movistar from third place AT&T on 4G.
Telcel continue to perform best for upload speeds
Telcel also retain the lead for the fastest upload speeds across the country on both 3G and 4G with average results of 2.13 Mbps and 7.63 Mbps respectively. In Nuevo León however AT&T take the lead on 4G with a score for September of 9.02 Mbps compared with Telcel’s 8.21 Mbps. Movistar, who have reported a drop in revenue over the last three months despite a large increase in subscribers, placed consistently in third place for upload speeds across the country.
AT&T retain latency lead
Similar to our August report, AT&T perform best for latency, having reduced their average latency results on 4G from 52.6 ms to 51.4 ms. This puts them ahead of both Telcel and Movistar who reported 54.8 ms and 56.2 ms respectively. Movistar however do jump to second place in Distrito Federal and first place in the state of México where they manage a result for September of 54.9 ms.
Our findings for Mexico are based on 22.5 billion network quality measurements including 1.28 million speed tests in September 2018. Our latest complimentary Mobile Experience Report is available to download from the Tutela Insights portal.
