Vodafone consistently offered the best mobile experience to its customers in Italy according to a new report from Tutela, a global crowdsourced mobile data company. The new 2020 State of Mobile Experience Report found that Vodafone offered its users the highest Excellent Consistent Quality in the country, indicating that in 78.9% of tests in Common Coverage Areas, a users’ connection was good enough for demanding applications, including 1080p video streaming, real-time mobile gaming, and HD video calling. Vodafone also had the highest Core Consistent Quality in Italy, with 93.8% of connections good enough for SD video streaming, social media sharing, and web browsing.
Meanwhile TIM and Wind Tre tied for the fastest median download speed at 21.6 Mbps, while TIM also had the fastest median upload speed in the country at 10.6 Mbps. TIM also won in the new coverage category, with the operator indicating that it had not only the best 4G/5G coverage but also the best total coverage in the country relative to the other providers.
In this report, Tutela has analyzed over 5 billion total records taken from real-world smartphone users, including more than 27 million speed and latency tests, taken between May 1st and October 31st 2020, to provide insight into the average experience of subscribers on each of Italy’s top four providers.
Key findings from this report include:
- Vodafone won in three out of the six metrics tested, with particular success in delivering the best subscriber mobile experience - the operator had both the highest Excellent Consistent Quality at 78.9% and Core Consistent Quality at 93.8%, and best latency result at 18.9 ms one way.
- However, TIM also won in three out of the six metrics tests, with a first place tie for fastest download speed along with Wind Tre (21.6 Mbps), the fastest upload speed, and best overall coverage.
- Wind Tre made it onto the leaderboard once with its first place tie with TIM for fastest download speed, and was close behind TIM for upload speed, falling behind by only 1.2 Mbps.
Tom Luke, VP at Tutela, commented: “One of the things that struck us in this report was just how competitive all four major Italian operators were when it came to providing customers with a good mobile experience. Vodafone showed its prowess in the Italian market place with it taking out the top spot for both Excellent and Core Consistent Quality, and best latency result. However it's closely followed by the likes of TIM, winning in three important categories as well, and even Wind Tre in download throughput. We look forward to following along in the journey of Italy’s operators and its future 5G development endeavours.”
